What should I be looking for when buying kitchen flooring?
Choosing kitchen laminate flooring can be more complicated than other rooms. It must be suitable for high traffic so it does not wear out prematurely.
Think about what your kitchen is used for, what the space acts as throughout the day (is it your home office/do the kids do homework at the table/do you have your washer & dryer in the room) & how much upkeep you prefer to do.
For example, if you know the kitchen is rarely used but is where you’re entertaining, you might opt for oak-style kitchen laminate. If it’s where the family spends all day, and the floor acts as a play mat, too, laminate with a higher wear rating suits best.
What colour laminate works best in kitchens?
Have a big, messy family that trots through from the garden and brings everything in with them? Lighter/white kitchen laminate might not be the best option. A lovely grey or darker kitchen laminate is usually easier to keep clean.
Although laminate flooring has the advantage of being incredibly easy to keep clean with spills and such, you might find that a light or white kitchen laminate can bring the room to life. We recommend going lighter if you need your kitchen to retain a lot of light, especially if it’s a cramped kitchen with smaller windows/doesn’t get the sun later in the day.
Getting creative with kitchen laminate
If you want your kitchen to be a fun and inspiring space in the home, some of our multi-coloured kitchen laminate options are hard to pass on. Products like the Chateau Black and White Herringbone Mix do wonders to give kitchens character, while the Faus Victorian Tile laminate is fantastic if you plan to have the flooring “bleed” into the hallway, utility room and other spaces downstairs.
Keeping your kitchen flooring looking its best
For enhanced protection, look out for our waterproof badge on the product page, or use a product like Clic Sealer, which gets applied over click joints to protect them. We also have a great range of almost waterproof laminate flooring available for the most demanding spaces.
Accessories for your kitchen laminate
When installing in the kitchen, you may have to deal with tiny gaps between planks and cabinets – especially if you have a kitchen island. We recommend adding some skirting and door strips to your basket to ensure that when the laminate is down, you’ll be able to finish the job. And if you’ve recently done some renovations in the kitchen that included getting new radiators, we highly recommend some radiator collars – ideal for hiding the cuts needed to get laminate in those tricky lunches.
