Do you need an expansion gap for laminate flooring?

When laying laminate flooring it is essential that you leave at least a 10-12mm expansion gap around the perimeter of the floor. There are important reasons to do so, and we will cover them in this article. However, you won't need to worry about any spaces around the perimeter of your installation. Expansion gaps are easily covered by beading, skirting boards, door bars, and radiator collars. The floor should not touch anything on the perimeter. This includes :
- walls
- radiator pipes
- adjacent flooring
- stairs
- kitchen units etc.
Experienced and qualified wood floor fitters advise that in larger areas, a bigger laminate floor expansion gap should be used.
Why do I need to leave an expansion gap for Laminate Floors?
Expansion gaps are essential in all laminate floor installations. Temperature and humidity will change in all rooms. This result is the laminate flooring will expanding and contract as the temperature and humidity change. It's the same with solid and engineered wood floors. Without an expansion gap 'buckling' is a common problem. The expanding laminate floor has no gap to allow for movement. This will cause laminate floorboards to be forced up, often causing a bounce. In extreme cases, it can damage the click system. This is a common problem found amongst poor quality installations but with the right preparation, it can be easily avoided.
